A few of you know that recently, I just had the adventure of a lifetime. I was lucky enough to be selected to participate on Fox’s MasterChef. For those of you who haven’t watched, it’s a cooking show hosted by three of the most celebrated figures in the culinary world. Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and Joe Bastianich. The show lets amateur home cooks, like me, compete to earn the title of America’s MasterChef. A pretty big title to go for.
I’ve been quietly cooking at my home for years, watching every cooking competition show that I could find, and yelling at the television – “How could they mess that up?!!” I can do that! Sometimes, I would even cook a dish from one of the episodes, just to prove to myself that my bold statements were correct. Then I would turn the television off and go to bed. Repeat the following week. Repeat the following week. Repeat the following week.
Then one morning, over a cup of coffee, I found out that MC was coming to DC for auditions via the Washington Post. Should I do it?
So, after a few glasses of wine that night, I decided to throw caution to the wind and go to the audition. What’s the worst that could happen? I knew that I could cook, so fuck it. I decided to go through with it, and audition.
And now here I stand. One of the top 100 amateur cooks in America. I get to serve a dish to three very amazing judges, meet 99 other amazing cooks who share the same passion that I have, and try to prove that I have it in me to win the title of MasterChef.
First things first. I need to win an apron in order to get to the top 36. Next week, we’ll all find out if I can. Bourdain says to grab life by the balls, and enjoy it. Just make sure you eat, cook, and drink a lot while your living it.
Tune in Mon/Tues 9pm EST on Fox for the MasterChef Premiere.
